The 7 Chakras and Reiki: A Complete Guide to Chakra Healing

The chakra system is often used in Reiki and other energy-healing practices as a framework for understanding the flow and balance of energy throughout the body.

Everything You Need to Know About REIKI AND THE 7 CHAKRAS

What is a Chakra?

A chakra is a concept from several Indian spiritual traditions, especially Hinduism and later Buddhist practices. The word "chakra" comes from Sanskrit and means "wheel" or "disk."

In these traditions, chakras are described as centers of subtle energy within the body that are associated with different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Most modern Western energy-healing practices focus on seven main chakras running from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

During a Reiki session, a practitioner may work with these energy centers as part of a whole-body approach intended to encourage relaxation, balance, and overall well-being.

What Are the 7 Chakras?

The seven main chakras are:

  1. Root - located at the base of the spine
  2. Sacral - located just above the navel
  3. Solar - located below the navel
  4. Heart - located at the center of the chest
  5. Throat - located at the throat
  6. Third Eye - located between the eyebrows
  7. Crown - located at the top of the head

Let's look more closely at each chakra and how Reiki may be incorporated into chakra-focused energy work.

1. Root Chakra

Sanskrit name: Muladhara
Location: Base of the spine
Color: Red
Element: Earth
Main themes: Grounding, security, stability, and belonging

The root chakra forms the foundation of the seven-chakra system. It is associated with our basic sense of security and our ability to feel grounded and connected to the physical world.

Someone exploring root chakra work may be focusing on feelings of safety, stability, belonging, or being more present in everyday life.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Root Chakra

A balanced root chakra is traditionally associated with feeling:

  • Grounded
  • Secure
  • Stable
  • Present
  • Comfortable in your body
  • Connected to your surroundings

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

People sometimes explore root chakra healing when they feel chronically unsettled, fearful, disconnected, insecure, or unable to relax.

Reiki and the Root Chakra

Reiki focused around the root chakra may be used with the intention of encouraging grounding and relaxation. A practitioner might work around the lower body, hips, legs, or feet as part of the session.

Grounding exercises, spending time in nature, gentle movement, and mindful breathing can also complement root chakra work.

2. Sacral Chakra

Sanskrit name: Svadhisthana
Location: Lower abdomen, below the navel
Color: Orange
Element: Water
Main themes: Emotions, creativity, pleasure and relationships

The sacral chakra is traditionally connected with emotional expression, creativity, enjoyment, relationships, and our ability to experience pleasure.

It is often described as an energy center associated with our capacity to feel and flow rather than control every experience.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Sacral Chakra

A balanced sacral chakra is commonly associated with:

  • Creativity
  • Emotional openness
  • Healthy relationships
  • Flexibility
  • Enjoyment
  • Ability to embrace change

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

People may focus on this chakra when they feel emotionally blocked, creatively stuck, disconnected from pleasure, or resistant to change.

Reiki and the Sacral Chakra

During Reiki, attention may be directed toward the lower abdominal area with the intention of supporting energetic balance and relaxation.

Creative activities such as painting, writing, dancing, gardening, cooking, or making music may also complement sacral chakra work.

3. Solar Chakra

Sanskrit name: Manipura
Location: Upper abdomen
Color: Yellow
Element: Fire
Main themes: Confidence, personal power, motivation and self-esteem

The solar chakra is often considered the center of personal power.

It is associated with confidence, decision-making, motivation, boundaries, self-esteem, and our ability to take purposeful action.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Solar Chakra

Someone with balanced solar energy may feel:

  • Confident
  • Motivated
  • Capable
  • Independent
  • Decisive
  • Comfortable setting boundaries

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

Solar chakra work is sometimes explored when someone struggles with low confidence, indecision, lack of motivation, people-pleasing, or difficulty maintaining healthy boundaries.

Reiki and the Solar Chakra

Reiki may be directed toward the upper abdominal area with the intention of encouraging relaxation and energetic balance.

Practices involving healthy boundaries, goal-setting, physical activity, and acknowledging personal accomplishments can also complement this work.

4. Heart Chakra

Sanskrit name: Anahata
Location: Center of the chest
Color: Green
Element: Air
Main themes: Love, compassion, forgiveness and connection

The heart chakra sits in the middle of the seven-chakra system and is commonly viewed as a bridge between the lower and upper chakras.

It is associated with our ability to give and receive love—not only romantic love, but also compassion, friendship, kindness, forgiveness, and love for ourselves.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Heart Chakra

Balanced heart chakra energy is traditionally associated with:

  • Compassion
  • Empathy
  • Healthy relationships
  • Forgiveness
  • Self-love
  • Emotional openness

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

Someone may explore heart chakra work while processing grief, resentment, loneliness, emotional withdrawal, relationship difficulties, or challenges with giving or receiving love.

Reiki and the Heart Chakra

The heart chakra is an area many Reiki practitioners naturally spend time around during a session.

Reiki around the chest may be offered with the intention of supporting relaxation, emotional balance, and a greater sense of peace.

Practices involving gratitude, forgiveness, self-compassion, and meaningful connection with others may complement heart chakra work.

5. Throat Chakra

Sanskrit name: Vishuddha
Location: Throat
Color: Blue
Element: Ether/space
Main themes: Communication, truth and self-expression

The throat chakra is associated with communication and authentic expression.

It isn't simply about how much someone talks. Chakra traditions also connect it with listening, honesty, expressing needs, and feeling comfortable communicating who you truly are.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Throat Chakra

Balanced throat chakra energy may be associated with:

  • Clear communication
  • Honest self-expression
  • Good listening
  • Confidence expressing needs
  • Ability to establish boundaries through communication
  • Feeling heard

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

People may explore throat chakra work when they have difficulty speaking up, expressing emotions, asking for what they need, or communicating confidently.

Reiki and the Throat Chakra

A practitioner may position their hands near the throat, neck, shoulders, or upper chest without necessarily touching the throat itself.

Journaling, singing, humming, mindful listening, and practicing honest communication can complement Reiki focused on this chakra.

6. Third Eye Chakra

Sanskrit name: Ajna
Location: Forehead, between the eyebrows
Color: Indigo
Main themes: Intuition, insight, awareness and inner wisdom

The third eye chakra is traditionally associated with intuition and our ability to see beyond surface-level experiences.

Rather than referring to physical eyesight, the idea of the "third eye" relates to inner perception, awareness, discernment, and insight.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Third Eye Chakra

Balanced third eye energy is commonly associated with:

  • Strong intuition
  • Mental clarity
  • Self-awareness
  • Imagination
  • Ability to see situations from different perspectives
  • Trust in inner guidance

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

People may explore third eye chakra work when they feel mentally scattered, disconnected from their intuition, overly analytical, confused, or unable to see a situation clearly.

Reiki and the Third Eye Chakra

During Reiki, the practitioner may hold their hands above or gently around the forehead and head.

Meditation, quiet reflection, journaling, visualization, and spending time away from constant stimulation can also complement third eye chakra work.

7. Crown Chakra

Sanskrit name: Sahasrara
Location: Top of the head
Color: Violet or white
Main themes: Spirituality, consciousness, meaning and connection

The crown chakra is the seventh of the primary chakras and is associated with spiritual awareness and connection to something greater than ourselves.

Depending on a person's beliefs, this might be understood as connection with God, Source, universal consciousness, nature, or simply a deeper sense of meaning and purpose.

Signs Often Associated With a Balanced Crown Chakra

Balanced crown chakra energy is traditionally associated with:

  • Inner peace
  • Spiritual connection
  • Open-mindedness
  • Sense of purpose
  • Greater awareness
  • Feeling connected to something beyond yourself

Signs Traditionally Associated With Imbalance

People may explore crown chakra work when they feel spiritually disconnected, directionless, overly attached to material concerns, or uncertain about meaning and purpose.

Reiki and the Crown Chakra

Reiki practitioners may work above or around the top of the head during a treatment.

Meditation, silence, prayer, contemplation, gratitude, and spending quiet time in nature can complement crown chakra work.

How Does Reiki Work With the Chakras?

Reiki and the chakra system are not exactly the same practice.

Reiki originated in Japan, while the concept of chakras comes from Indian spiritual traditions. Over time, many contemporary Reiki practitioners have incorporated chakra awareness into their sessions.

A Reiki practitioner may scan or observe the client's energy and spend additional time around areas that seem to need attention.

Depending on the practitioner's training, a chakra-focused Reiki session might include:

  • Reiki hand positions
  • Aura work
  • Chakra balancing
  • Energy scanning
  • Visualization
  • Grounding techniques
  • Intuitive energy work

The practitioner may work directly over a chakra or several inches above the body.

What Does Chakra Balancing With Reiki Feel Like?

Every person's experience is different.

During a Reiki treatment, some people report sensations such as warmth, coolness, tingling, heaviness, lightness, gentle pulsing, or a feeling of energy moving through the body.

Others don't notice physical sensations at all.

One of the most common experiences during Reiki is simply becoming deeply relaxed. Some people become so relaxed that they fall asleep.

You don't have to feel energy moving through a particular chakra for the session to be meaningful.

How Does Reiki Unblock the Chakras?

In Reiki practice, chakras are viewed as energy centers that can sometimes become imbalanced, depleted, or stagnant. Reiki practitioners may describe this as a chakra being “blocked.”

During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands gently on or just above the body and allows Reiki energy to flow. When working with the chakras, the practitioner may spend additional time around areas where they sense an energetic imbalance.

Reiki is traditionally understood to support chakra balance in several ways:

  • Encouraging energetic flow: Reiki practitioners believe the practice can help restore a smoother flow of energy through areas that feel stagnant or restricted.
  • Promoting deep relaxation: Stress and tension can make us feel physically and emotionally constricted. Reiki encourages relaxation, which may help a person feel more open, grounded, and balanced.
  • Supporting emotional awareness: Chakra traditions associate different energy centers with emotions and life experiences. A Reiki session may create quiet space for emotions to surface and be acknowledged.
  • Balancing rather than forcing: Reiki isn't generally used to force a chakra “open.” The approach is gentle, with the intention of supporting the body's overall energetic balance.
  • Working with the whole system: Because the seven chakras are considered interconnected, Reiki practitioners often work with all seven rather than concentrating solely on the chakra that appears out of balance.

For example, someone having difficulty expressing themselves might focus on the throat chakra, while someone feeling insecure or ungrounded might focus on the root chakra. A Reiki practitioner may still work with the entire chakra system because an imbalance in one area may be connected to others.

How Can You Support Your Chakras at Home?

You don't have to wait until a Reiki session to develop greater awareness of your energy and well-being.

Simple practices can include:

  1. Root: Grounding, walking outside, gentle exercise
  2. Sacral: Creative activities, movement, emotional expression
  3. Solar Plexus: Setting goals and practicing healthy boundaries
  4. Heart: Gratitude, compassion and forgiveness
  5. Throat: Journaling and honest communication
  6. Third Eye: Meditation, reflection and quiet time
  7. Crown: Meditation, prayer or spiritual contemplation

You can also practice Reiki self-treatment if you've received Reiki training.

Reiki and the 7 Chakras: Working With the Whole Person

One of the most useful ways to think about the seven chakras is not as seven completely separate energy centers, but as parts of an interconnected system.

For example, someone struggling to speak up may naturally think about the Throat Chakra. But confidence and boundaries are associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra, while fear and insecurity may relate to the Root Chakra.

This is one reason a whole-body Reiki treatment can be valuable rather than concentrating exclusively on one chakra.

The goal isn't necessarily to decide that something is "wrong" with a particular chakra. Instead, chakra awareness can provide another way of exploring where you may be holding tension, feeling disconnected, or seeking greater balance in your life.

Final Thoughts

The seven chakras provide a useful framework for exploring the connection between the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of well-being.

Whether you are receiving Reiki from a practitioner or practicing Reiki yourself, you don't need to force an experience. Sometimes the most beneficial thing you can do is simply allow yourself the time and space to relax, become present, and reconnect with yourself.
