Reiki Relaxes the Body, Reduces Stress, and Promotes Healing

What Is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:

  • Rei – Universal or spiritual wisdom
  • Ki – Life force energy

Together, Reiki can be understood as "universal life energy."  This energy is all around us, and every living person is composed of this energy. Reiki Relaxes the Body, Reduces Stress, and Promotes Healing.

What is Distance Reiki?

Distance Reiki allows you to receive a Reiki session without being physically present with the practitioner.

Whether you live far away, have a busy schedule, are traveling, or simply prefer the comfort of your own home, distance Reiki can provide an opportunity to relax, reconnect, and experience the calming benefits of a Reiki session.

Reiki practitioners are attuned to the distance healing symbol, which allows them to send the energy across time and space, as opposed to being in the same room. Most of us cannot comprehend how the energy travels, but we can definitely feel its presence.

How Does Distance Reiki Work?

Reiki is a gentle practice that supports deep relaxation and helps encourage the body’s natural ability to move from a state of stress into a more peaceful, restorative state. Many people experience Reiki as calming and grounding, and research has explored its potential benefits for relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being.

Stress is a natural part of life and affects everyone. However, when the body remains in a prolonged state of stress without adequate time for rest and relaxation, it can impact our overall sense of balance and wellness.

Reiki offers a peaceful opportunity to slow down, quiet the mind, and create space for relaxation and renewal. Through regular sessions, many clients report feeling calmer, more centered, and better able to manage the stresses of daily life.

What Are the Healing Benefits of Distance Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, relaxing practice that supports the body’s natural ability to rest, restore, and return to a sense of balance. Many clients describe feeling deeply relaxed, peaceful, and supported during their sessions.

Reiki may be especially comforting for those navigating stressful life experiences, chronic conditions, or medical treatments by providing a calming space for relaxation and emotional support.

Clients often share that Reiki helps them feel more relaxed,  grounded, and centered. Some of the commonly reported benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Deep relaxation and a greater sense of calm
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Emotional balance and support
  • Relief from tension and feelings of overwhelm
  • A renewed sense of energy and well-being
  • Greater mindfulness and self-awareness
  • Support during times of change, recovery, or life transitions

Is Distance Reiki as Good as In-Person Reiki?

Yes! Many people experience distance Reiki as just as relaxing and supportive as an in-person session, and with regular sessions, many clients report feeling meaningful shifts in their overall sense of balance, relaxation, and well-being.

What Do Clients Experience?

Whether a session is in person or at a distance, many people describe similar experiences, including:

  • Deep relaxation
  • A sense of calm and peace
  • Feeling grounded and centered
  • Emotional balance
  • A quieter mind
  • Feeling refreshed after the session

Some clients report feeling warmth, tingling, or other subtle sensations during both in-person and distance Reiki. Others simply enjoy the opportunity to relax without noticing any specific physical sensations. Every experience is unique, and there is no "right" way to experience Reiki.

The Advantages of Distance Reiki

Distance Reiki offers a different kind of convenience and flexibility. Many people appreciate that they can:

  • Receive Reiki from the comfort of home
  • Avoid travel time
  • Schedule sessions more easily
  • Continue Reiki while traveling
  • Receive sessions regardless of where they live

Some people also find it easier to relax in familiar surroundings, making the experience feel just as peaceful as an in-person session.

You may prefer distance Reiki if you value:

  • Convenience
  • Flexibility
  • Receiving Reiki from home
  • Access to a practitioner who may not be nearby

Does Belief Affect the Experience?

Some people wonder if they need to believe in Reiki for a session to be worthwhile. Many first-time clients approach Reiki with simple curiosity and report enjoying the opportunity to slow down and relax.

Many clients find that the most important factor isn't whether the session is in person or at a distance—it's taking time to pause, relax, and care for their overall well-being.

  • A distance Reiki study has been conducted with healthcare professionals, which assessed distance Reiki with nurses and found decreased stress, anxiety, and pain.  Sage Journals
  • Distance Reiki lowers stress and pain for hundreds with cancer, and 91% rated the distant Reiki sessions as helpful by scoring the sessions at a 4 or 5.  LifeSpark Cancer Research

How to Prepare for Your Distance Reiki Session:

Choose a Quiet, Comfortable Space

Find a place where you are unlikely to be interrupted during your session. This might be your bedroom, living room, or another quiet area where you can rest comfortably.

If possible:

  • Silence your phone or place it on "Do Not Disturb."
  • Let family members or roommates know you'll need some quiet time.
  • If you have pets, consider whether they'll help you relax or might become a distraction.

Remember, your space doesn't have to be perfect. Simply choose a place where you feel comfortable.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

You will remain fully clothed during your distance Reiki session, so wear clothing that helps you feel relaxed. Loose-fitting or comfortable clothing is ideal, but there are no special requirements.

You may also want to remove a watch or anything that feels restrictive, simply for your own comfort.

Create a Relaxing Atmosphere

Some people enjoy preparing their space by creating a peaceful environment. You might choose to:

  • Dim the lights
  • Play soft instrumental music
  • Light a candle (if it's safe to do so)
  • Diffuse a favorite essential oil
  • Cover yourself with a blanket if you tend to get cool

These are entirely optional. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable.

Minimize Distractions

Give yourself permission to step away from emails, social media, and daily responsibilities for the duration of your session. This time is an opportunity to focus on yourself and your well-being.

Consider Setting an Intention

Before your session, you may find it helpful to take a quiet moment and reflect on what brought you to Reiki. Your intention doesn't need to be complicated. It could simply be:

  • "I would like to relax."
  • "I want to feel more peaceful."
  • "I'm looking for balance."
  • "I'm open to whatever I need today."

An intention is not required, but many people find it helps them become more present during their session.

During Your Distance Reiki Session

When your session begins, simply relax. You may choose to:

  • Lie comfortably on a bed, couch, or reclining chair.
  • Sit comfortably with your feet supported if lying down isn't comfortable.
  • Close your eyes if it helps you relax.
  • Breathe naturally and allow yourself to simply be.

There is nothing you need to do or think about. There is no right or wrong way to receive Reiki.

Some people meditate during their session, while others drift into a light sleep. Both experiences are completely normal.

Stay Open to Your Experience Every Reiki session is unique. You may notice:

  • Deep relaxation
  • Warmth or gentle sensations
  • A quiet mind
  • A feeling of peace
  • Emotional awareness
  • No noticeable sensations at all

All of these experiences are normal. You do not need to feel anything specific for your session to be meaningful.

After Your Session

When your session is complete, take a few moments before returning to your normal routine.

Many people find it helpful to:

  • Drink a glass of water.
  • Stretch gently.
  • Spend a few quiet minutes reflecting on how they feel.
  • Write down any thoughts or insights in a journal.
  • Continue taking it easy if their schedule allows.

Some people notice an immediate sense of calm, while others become aware of more subtle shifts over the next day or two. Self-care tips after your Reiki session
